Republican Theatre of Belarussian Drama
The Byelorussian playwright Sergey Kovalov constructed his drama in a very original way, developing the motives which he adopted from Franz Kafka and Tadeusz Różewicz. The Polish audience had an opportunity to get acquainted with Kovalov’s text at the Lublin festival in 2006 where it was presented within the scheme of the project “Absent Drama. Reading Contemporary Byelorussian Drama.”. “The Return of the Starveling” was interpreted by the audience and critics as a tribute to Tadeusz Różewicz and example of his vital influence on the literature of other Slavonic countries. The production refers to “The Departure of the Starveling” directed by Valery Anisenko at Theatre of Byeolorussian Drama in Minsk in 2005 (commissioned by the “Theatre Confrontations” International Festival ). It was premiered at the 10th edition of the Lublin festival in the autumn of the same year.
