The Anathema originated from Wyspiański’s fascination with Greek tragedy. If it is Greek tragedy we get confronted with massive suffering, pain and reasons of the protagonists destroyed by fate. It will destroy Priest, Young Woman, but also Hermit, Soltys and the inhabitants of the village whom Wyspiański made co-responsible for their fate. Priest and Young Woman met, fell in love, had children…and they should not have met, they should not have fallen in love, they should not have had children. Love led to sin. Love led to crime. Who is right – we do not know. However, we knew from the beginning that to tell a story and face it we have to put forward great, true emotions. Together with actors we looked for a tone, force and way of pronouncing the text. In order to bring the story close to life we perform it in Nadrzecze on the meadow which remind of Greek theatre. In the village of Narzecze the history of this theatre has been written by Alicja Jachniewicz and Stefan Szmidt for years. We built our village on this meadow after Jarek Koziara’s project. Janek Bernad, the ethno-musician found a musical form for the Anathema chorus, deeply rooted in the tradition of the Biłgoraj region. Let’s experience this story which once happened in Biecz, and let’s ask: did it happen only in Biecz; can it happen once again? Before we throw a stone at anybody let’s meditate if it is worth to throw a stone at all, and – as it used to happen in Greek theatre, full of wisdom – if nobody is right for fate gets fulfilled.- Janusz Opryński
