Situations are simple. It does not mean that they are easy to describe. Commentaries are complicated. Even when they endeavor after simplicity. Art I am not saying theatre has to proclaim itself in favor of one party. It has to make attempts at entering a situation or make comments on it. To remain on the safe side we moved into dealing with dreams. Without any symbols. Without commissioned dreamed archetypes. The worst possible emerged in dreams: allotment gardens a banal of relax, school a banal of duplication, snow in Naples a creaking board in Herling Grudziński’s study And honor to the Corpse.
The stylistics of Cinema Theatre, based on an absurd sense of humor and surrealism, has shaped the unique poetics of their performances. A stage figure of their make a pale man, wrapped in the blackness of his suit, his eyes concealed in the shade cast by his bowler-hat is typical of the company, easily recognizable. This figure, both tragic and comic, has acquired a status of being a manifestation of human condition, oscillating between the vibration of everyday life and the absurd. From the very beginning Cinema Theatre have been realizing performances which constitute their personal response to the products of mass culture. They describe their work as a rebellion of imagination against routinish reality. Their poetics is inspired by the paintings of Rene Magritte, Samuel Beckett’s writings, the works of dadaists as well as their everyday life experience reflected in absurdity.
